For three of them, there's some factual information available: rosemary oil has a small but serious comparative study, coconut oil has a measured physical effect on hair, and castor oil has primarily a very good reputation but very little research. Here's what each can do, how to use it correctly—and where its limitations lie.

OriginHair oil is older than shampoo

In India, oiling the scalp is not a beauty trend, but an everyday routine that has been practiced for millennia.

Long before shampoo existed, oil was humanity's go-to hair care product. In ancient Egypt, castor and moringa oils were used, in Greece and Rome olive oil, and in the Mediterranean region almond oil. However, the practice has remained most vibrant in South Asia: The mushroom, The oiling head massage is a weekly ritual in India, often passed down through generations - and the English word shampoo It comes precisely from Hindi. chāmpo.

Traditional Indian hair oils are based on coconut or sesame oil in which plants have been steeped: Bhringraj, Amla - the Indian gooseberry -, Brahmi and curry leaf. This is the same extraction principle that underlies European oil infusions with St. John's wort or calendula.

What has changed compared to the past is primarily the expectation. Historically, it was about care, shine, scalp massage, and a ritual. Today, the same oil is often sold online as a remedy for hair loss – and this is where tradition and evidence diverge. Therefore, this page clearly separates the two: first, what is scientifically proven, then what is tradition.

To useWhat actually speaks in favor of the three oils

At the Rosemary oil The best study on this site by far is from 2015, when an Iranian research group led by Panahi compared rosemary oil with minoxidil in a 2% solution in men with androgenetic alopecia over a six-month period. After six months, hair density had increased similarly in both groups, and the rosemary group reported less scalp itching. This is a remarkable finding—with limitations: the study was small, it lacked a true placebo group, and minoxidil 2 % is the weaker of the two common concentrations. It's a good indication, not proof.

At the coconut oil This is about something completely different, but it too has been measured. A much-cited study by Rele and Mohile from 2003 compared coconut, sunflower, and mineral oils and found that coconut oil alone significantly reduced protein loss in the hair—both before and after washing. The reason lies in its molecular structure: Lauric acid is straight, small, and has a high affinity for hair proteins, allowing it to penetrate the hair shaft instead of just sitting on the surface. This isn't a growth effect, but rather damage limitation—but it is a genuine, physically measurable effect.

At the castor oil Let's be honest: there are no clinical studies that prove castor oil promotes hair or eyelash growth. Its reputation rests on tradition, before-and-after photos, and the fact that it's very thick, making hair appear fuller and shinier. The ricinoleic acid it contains is pharmacologically interesting, but its effects on hair haven't been studied. Those who use it are simply using a good, heavy conditioning oil – nothing more.

And above all else is a number that puts every promise into perspective: hair grows about one centimeter per month, and this rate is genetically and hormonally determined. No oil can accelerate it. What oils can do is nourish the scalp, reduce breakage, and—in the case of rosemary—possibly stimulate blood circulation. What they cannot do: stop androgenetic alopecia or treat alopecia areata. Both of these require dermatological care.

6 monthsDuration of the rosemary oil study from 2015

2 %Minoxidil concentration in the control group

approx. 1 cmHair growth per month - unchanging

max. 2 %Dilution of essential oils for the scalp

IngredientsEthereal or fatty – the difference that makes all the difference

The most common mistake with hair oils is confusion. Rosemary oil, as defined in the studies, is a essential oilHighly concentrated, volatile, composed of hundreds of individual substances, and irritating in undiluted form. Coconut oil and castor oil are fatty oilsVegetable fats that can be used by the tablespoon. One is measured by drops, the other by spoonfuls – if you mix them up, you'll burn your scalp.

Rosemary essential oil consists primarily of 1,8-cineole, camphor, and α-pinene. For scalp application, it is diluted to a maximum of two percent, which is about ten to twelve drops per fifty milliliters of carrier oil. This is not a precautionary measure for the anxious, but rather the standard upper limit recommended in aromatherapy literature for topical applications. Furthermore, oils containing camphor should not be used on infants and young children, and rosemary oil is not recommended during pregnancy.

Coconut oil is solid at room temperature and melts at around 24 degrees Celsius – so it melts easily in your hand. Its lauric acid content is about half, and this short, straight fatty acid is precisely what allows it to penetrate so deeply. However, it can be too heavy for fine hair and weigh it down at the roots; in that case, it's the wrong oil.

Castor oil consists of approximately ninety percent ricinoleic acid, an unusual hydroxylated fatty acid that gives it its extreme viscosity. It is so thick that it is difficult to spread on its own and hard to wash out. And there is a rare but well-documented side effect: acute hair matting. hair felting The entire hair mass becomes matted within hours, forming a single, inextricable tangle. Several cases following castor oil application are described in dermatological literature, and in each case, the only solution was to cut the hair off. Therefore: always dilute castor oil one to one or more times with a light oil, never use it undiluted, and never apply it over large areas.

Enhanced combinationsWhat goes together

Fatty oils are the carriers, essential oils the active ingredients.
