Toxins in everyday life: Socially accepted, but demonstrably harmful to the body
Don't worry, this isn't going to be a panic list. But there are a few substances that have become so commonplace that nobody gives them a second thought, even though research has long been taking a closer look. Here's an honest overview: what's behind it, what the real situation is, and where you can achieve a lot with minimal effort.
Why these substances remain in everyday life despite the risks
For most of these substances, the problem isn't the individual dose, but the cumulative effect: small amounts from packaging, cosmetics, and processed foods, day after day, over years. This gradual accumulation is precisely what never appears on any ingredient list.
Furthermore, authorities often only adjust limit values decades after the first warning signs. The dye titanium dioxide, for example, was only banned EU-wide in 2022, after concerns had been known for years. This doesn't mean that every trace is dangerous. Dose and duration still matter. But it does mean: you should be more vigilant than the average person.
Fluoride: a closer look
Fluoride is found in drinking water, salt, and especially toothpaste, and is one of the most discussed everyday substances. The honest answer: It's not as simple as "fluoride is poison." But studies show enough warning signs at typical Western doses, for example regarding neurological development in children, to suggest that consciously reducing fluoride intake is advisable.
The good news: You don't have to miss out on anything. Nano-hydroxyapatite has established itself as a fluoride-free alternative for dental care and supports the remineralization of tooth enamel just as effectively. You can find more information about fluoride in salt on our salt types page.
Other everyday fabrics in focus
Five fabrics you should know about
- Industrial trans fats: Hydrogenated fats are produced during the hydrogenation of vegetable oils (margarine, frying fat, many baked goods). They worsen cholesterol levels in both directions. A limit has been in place in the EU since 2021, but it's still worth checking the ingredient list for "hydrogenated fats".
- Aspartame and artificial sweeteners: In 2023, the WHO's cancer research agency classified aspartame as "possibly carcinogenic," but the threshold values remained unchanged. A classic gray area where caution is more reassuring than waiting.
- Microplastics: It has now been detected in blood, liver, intestines, and even brain tissue. Initial studies suggest links to inflammation and cellular stress; the long-term effects are still being researched.
- PFAS, the „eternity chemicals“: They are found in coated pans, fast-food packaging, and water-repellent clothing. They hardly break down and are linked to liver, thyroid, and immune problems.
- Nitrite curing salt in sausage products: Nitrosamines can form when processed meat is heated. The WHO has classified processed meat as a confirmed carcinogen since 2015; as little as 50 grams per day increases the risk of colorectal cancer by approximately 18 percent.
An example of how regulation can work.
So you don't think things never change: The white pigment titanium dioxide was used in chewing gum, sauces, and sweets for decades. In 2022, it was banned as a food additive across the EU after the EFSA could no longer rule out risks to genetic material. Caution therefore pays off, even if it sometimes takes a while for warning signs to turn into bans.
Consciously reduce stress in everyday life
The most important point to remember: It's not about perfection, but about frequency. What you do every day counts more than the one exception at the birthday party.
Four levers with a big impact
- Fluoride-free toothpaste with Hydroxyapatite as the default choice.
- Processed meat Enjoy it as an exception rather than every day.
- For baked goods and fried foods, briefly press on the Ingredients list look.
- Glass or stainless steel Instead of plastic, where it's easy: drinking bottle, storage containers, frying pan.
Thoroughly cleaned fruits and vegetables also remove many residues, and a good supply of nutrients supports the body's natural detoxification process as a side effect. Step by step, without stress.
