🦋 How your thyroid gland controls your metabolism

The thyroid gland produces the hormones T3 and T4, which reach virtually every cell in the body and regulate the pace of the entire metabolism – from energy consumption and body temperature to heart rate. This production is controlled via a feedback loop with the pituitary gland (TSH), which requests more or less thyroid hormone as needed.

The thyroid gland requires a continuous supply of iodine as a building block for hormone production, as well as other minerals such as selenium and zinc for converting the hormones into their active form. If this regulatory cycle becomes unbalanced (due to nutrient deficiencies, autoimmune processes, or chronic stress), it noticeably affects the entire metabolism.

The following section explains in detail how the clinical picture and causes of thyroid disease are related.

1. Clinical picture & causes

Thyroid disorders affect metabolism, mental health, digestion, and fertility. Typical symptoms include fatigue, nervousness, weight fluctuations, and sensitivity to cold or heat. Common causes include nutrient deficiencies (iodine, selenium, zinc), autoimmune processes (Hashimoto's thyroiditis), stress (cortisol), and environmental pollution (fluoride, heavy metals).

2. Nutrition for the thyroid gland

Recommended: Iodine (algae, eggs - caution with Hashimoto's!); Selenium, zinc, iron (Brazil nuts, millet, organic meat); Vitamins A & D (butter, grass-fed milk, liver); Omega-3 fatty acids.

Avoid: Gluten & sugar if you have Hashimoto's; Goitrogens (raw cabbage, soy) - only cooked; Chlorine, Fluorine, Aluminum.

3. Herbs & Spices - Effects & Uses

  • Ashwagandha - cortisol-regulating, calming - powder in pasture milk
  • Rhodiola - adaptogenic, hormone-balancing - tea, capsules
  • Lemon balm - calming, thyroid-regulating tea, fresh
  • Nettle - rich in iron, metabolism-boosting - tea, juice
  • Schisandra - liver-activating, hormone-regulating - tincture, powder
  • Cinnamon - metabolism-activating - porridge, tea, milk
  • turmeric + Pepper - anti-inflammatory, immunomodulating - Golden Milk, Paste
  • rosemary - stimulating, circulation-activating - tea, oil

4. Home remedies & applications

6. Studies & Science

  • Ashwagandha increases T3/T4 (PMID: 28458495)
  • Turmeric reduces inflammation in autoimmune thyroiditis (PMID: 25540223)
  • Rhodiola has adaptogenic and hormone-modulating effects (PMID: 17990195)
  • Lemon balm is traditionally used for hyperthyroidism.

7. Notes & Cautions

  • Iodine only in cases of confirmed hypothyroidism (Hashimoto's = caution!)
  • Rosemary and cinnamon should not be used in cases of hyperthyroidism.
  • Ashwagandha: possibly too strong in cases of hyperthyroidism
  • Medical supervision is required when taking medication.

8. Holistic support

  • Regular sleep and eating rhythm
  • Stress reduction (meditation, nature, breathing)
