Frequencies: How sounds and vibrations affect your body

Music can calm you down or energize you in seconds, you know that. But did you know that your body also reacts to sounds you don't consciously hear? Here's an honest overview: what sound really does to you, which frequencies are good for you, and where the line lies between science and wishful thinking.

This is how frequencies affect your body

Sound is vibration. Your ear converts it into electrical signals that go to the brain. But your hearing isn't the only receiver: at certain low frequencies, your rib cage itself vibrates. So you literally feel some sounds in your body, not just in your ear.

Both pathways affect your autonomic nervous system through frequencies, measurable in heart rate, cortisol, and muscle tension. Calm, even sounds activate the recovery mode. Chaotic, very deep, or very loud sounds have the opposite effect.

What frequencies actually are

A hertz (Hz) is one vibration per second. You can hear roughly between 20 Hz (very low) and 20,000 Hz (very high). Everything below that is called infrasound, everything above it ultrasound; you don't perceive either as sound, but your body still reacts to them. Music is now typically tuned to concert pitch at 440 Hz. Some musicians prefer 432 Hz, and there are some fascinating observations related to this.

  • 432 Hz music: In a placebo-controlled pilot study, heart rate was on average almost 5 beats per minute lower when listening to 432 Hz music than when listening to 440 Hz; participants also reported feeling calmer and more focused.   • Sounds of nature and noise: The sound of the ocean, rain, white or pink noise masks disruptive noises and has been proven to help with falling and staying asleep. Completely without any mysticism.
  • Slow, deep rhythms: Sounds in the delta and theta range accompany meditative states. Research on binaural beats is mixed: trying them out won't hurt, but you shouldn't rely on them.
  • 528 Hz, the „love frequency“: The idea that it repairs DNA is a myth without any basis. Small studies do show a mildly relaxing effect, similar to many calming sounds. The magic lies in its tranquil nature, not in its quantity.

Frequencies that can put a strain on your body

These sound environments are stressful

  • Infrasound: It is caused by traffic, air conditioning, or industry. You don't hear it, but your chest perceives it through resonance. Prolonged exposure is associated with headaches, sleep problems, and elevated cortisol levels.
  • Continuous noise: Constant street noise keeps the stress response active. Under continuous acoustic stimulation, the body has more difficulty relaxing, and sleep and concentration suffer.
  • Electronic frequency everyday life: The situation with radio waves from cell phones and Wi-Fi is much less clear than with sound. The WHO classifies them as "possibly carcinogenic" as a precautionary measure, but a clear mechanism of action has not been proven. A relaxed, cautious approach is sufficient: simply don't place your cell phone directly next to your head at night.

Solfeggio frequencies and similar healing promises

The so-called Solfeggio frequencies (396, 417, 528, 639, 741, 852 Hz) are often attributed with specific healing effects, supposedly handed down from Gregorian chants. This cannot be historically proven, and there is no scientific basis for promises such as "dissolving toxins" or "repairing" organs.

What is true, however, is that calm, even sounds relax and reduce stress, as research repeatedly shows. This effect depends on the character of the sound, not on a magic number. So you can listen to what calms you down and don't need to chase after a frequency chart.

Consciously integrating frequencies into everyday life

The most effective approach is to combine both: consciously create quiet moments with soothing sounds, whether 432 Hz music, nature sounds, or simply silence, while simultaneously reducing constant noise wherever possible. Use noise-canceling headphones, position the bedroom towards the quieter side, and take breaks from the ambient noise.
