Psyllium husks

Available at Nature Heart

Indian psyllium seeds, 99% purity.

The seed husks of the Indian psyllium (Plantago ovata), a classic bulking agent from the kitchen and home medicine cabinet.

At a glance

  • Plant: Plantago ovata, Indian psyllium, a plantain family plant
  • Part used: only the seed coat, not the whole seed
  • Origin: India and Pakistan, where it has been cultivated for centuries
  • Quality feature: The purity level, specified as 99 % or 99.9 %
  • Tradition: It is just as common in Indian home kitchens as it is in European home medicine cabinets.
Shell instead of seed: The shell and the whole seed are not the same. The shell consists almost entirely of mucilage and binds many times its weight in water, while the whole seed also contains oil and protein. Anyone comparing recipes must pay attention to this difference; the quantities are not interchangeable.

What's inside

Over 80% % soluble dietary fiber, essentially Arabinoxylan, which are long-chain mucilage substances. Small amounts of protein and minerals are also present. A good product consists practically only of these, without additives, separating agents, or flavorings. The purity grade on the packaging indicates how much foreign matter from seeds and husks is still present.

How they are used

Stir one to two teaspoons into a large glass of water, drink quickly and Immediately afterwards another glass of water Drink plenty of water afterward. This isn't just a minor detail, but a crucial safety rule: Shells without sufficient liquid swell in the digestive tract and can cause blockages. If you add them to muesli or dough, you must increase the amount of liquid in the recipe accordingly. Starting with a small amount and gradually increasing it over several days is easier on the stomach than jumping straight to the full dose.

Leave at least half an hour to an hour between taking medication and taking it., because the mucilage can delay their absorption.

Good to know

  • The one rule that really matters here: always take psyllium husks with plenty of fluids. Drink a large glass of water and drink enough throughout the day. Without liquid, they can clump together in the digestive tract.
  • Leave approximately one hour between taking all medications.
  • If you have diabetes and require insulin, keep a close medical eye on your insulin dosage, as it can change.
  • Psyllium husks are not suitable for cases of narrowing in the gastrointestinal tract, difficulty swallowing, or unexplained abdominal discomfort.
  • Not suitable for pets. We have our animal health section for that.

As always, dietary supplements are a supplement, not a substitute for good food and not a substitute for medical advice. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have children, pre-existing medical conditions, or are taking long-term medication, it is advisable to consult your doctor beforehand.

There is no dedicated profile for Plantago ovata in the Botanical Archives yet. It is on the list.
