What tradition tells us about the ginkgo

Living Fossil

Ginkgo trees grew around 200 million years ago, during the time of the dinosaurs. Fossilized leaves from the Jurassic period look almost identical to those of today.

Goethe's page

In 1815, Goethe wrote his poem "Ginkgo biloba" about the two-lobed leaf. Since then, the tree has been particularly popular in Germany.

Temple Tree

Temple gardens in China and Japan have preserved it for centuries. In Hiroshima, charred ginkgo trees sprouted again in the spring of 1945.
