Tradition & Ritual

What tradition tells us about spirulina

Tecuitlatl

The Aztecs scooped the blue-green substance from Lake Texcoco and called it Tecuitlatl. Spanish chroniclers saw it in the markets of Tenochtitlan.

Dihé from Lake Chad

To this day, the Kanembu people of Lake Chad skim off the blue-green algae and dry it in the sun into flatbreads called Dihé. Crumbled, it ends up in sauces.

The ritual

A teaspoon of the deep green powder disappears into a smoothie or yogurt. The taste is reminiscent of the sea and fresh grass.

More about spirulina in the Botanical Archive →

Spirulina: a cyanobacterium from alkaline waters, used as food for centuries, from the Aztecs to Lake Chad.

At a glance

  • Organism: Arthrospira platensis, a cyanobacterium („blue-green algae“)
  • Form: Tablets made from dried powder
  • Characteristic: approximately 60 % protein, blue-green pigment phycocyanin
  • Quality feature: Cultivation in controlled environments with testing for heavy metals and microcystins
The B12 fallacy: Spirulina is often advertised as a vegan source of vitamin B12. In reality, it contains mostly B12 analogs, which the human body cannot utilize and which can even distort test results. Those who follow a vegan diet need real B12, not algae.

What's inside

Dried spirulina, pressed into tablets, without binders, provided the manufacturer operates ethically. Origin and certificates of analysis are the most important purchasing criteria here.

How it is taken

Take the tablets with water according to the manufacturer's instructions, ideally starting gradually so that the digestive tract can get used to the algae.

Good to know

  • Spirulina is taboo for people with phenylketonuria (PKU) because it is rich in phenylalanine.
  • If you have an autoimmune disease, discuss taking the medication with your doctor beforehand.
  • Only buy tested products from controlled cultivation: Products from open waters may be contaminated with microcystins.
  • Not suitable for pets. We have our animal health section for that.

As always, dietary supplements are a supplement, not a substitute for good food and not a substitute for medical advice. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have children, pre-existing medical conditions, or are taking long-term medication, it is advisable to consult your doctor beforehand.
