Scent of the horse
The Sanskrit name roughly translates to "smell of the horse," referring to the pungent aroma of the fresh root. In some regions, the plant is also known as winter cherry.
Ancient Writings
Even classic Ayurvedic texts like the Charaka Samhita mention it. There, the root is described as bitter, astringent, and warming.
The ritual
Traditionally, the root powder is boiled in warm milk with a little ghee and honey and drunk in the evening.

Folk medicine, tradition, research
Ayurveda lists ashwagandha as a Rasayana, what withanolides are, and what current research says about them.
What's inside
The defining characteristics are... Withanolides, a group of steroidal lactones. The extract is standardized to its proportion, and you should look for this exact number on the label. The root also contains alkaloids and saponins. For an extract, the extract ratio and the solvent used should also be listed on the packaging; high-quality products use only water.
How it is taken
One capsule daily with a meal. Ideally, take it as a course of treatment for several weeks, followed by a break.
