Permitted information according to Regulation (EU) No 432/2012, in its official wording.

Zinc as bisglycinate: a chelate of the trace element and the amino acid glycine.

At a glance

  • Material: Zinc, an essential trace element
  • Connection type: Zinc bisglycinate, a chelate with two molecules of glycine
  • Reference value (NRV): 10 mg per day
  • Things to consider when comparing: The line item "of which zinc", not the amount of the compound
The connection trap: Many containers prominently display the amount of the compound. However, 50 mg of zinc bisglycinate is not 50 mg of zinc, but only a fraction of it. The crucial line is always "of which zinc" in the nutrition facts table.

What's inside

A zinc ion, enclosed by two molecules of the amino acid glycine. That's all a good supplement needs. The ingredient list will typically include, at most, an anti-caking agent like acacia fiber and the capsule shell, usually cellulose. The shorter the list, the less you have to look up.

What is not covered: „"Increases testosterone levels." Only the following is approved: conservation a normal mirror. Anything beyond that is baseless advertising.

How it is taken

The usual dosage is one capsule daily with a meal. Some people don't tolerate zinc well on an empty stomach. Zinc and iron use the same absorption pathways and can interfere with each other: a few hours' interval is sufficient. The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) recommends a maximum of 6.5 mg of zinc per day from dietary supplements; the upper limit for total daily intake from all sources is 25 mg. Keep an eye on any additional intake from multivitamins or supplements.

Good to know

  • Zinc can upset the stomach when taken on an empty stomach. A small amount of something else will usually solve the problem.
  • Take iron supplements at different times, as the two interfere with each other.
  • Persistently high zinc levels inhibit copper absorption. Therefore, keep in mind the amount of zinc already being absorbed through a multivitamin supplement.
  • If you have impaired kidney function, consult a doctor beforehand.
  • Consult a doctor beforehand if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Not suitable for pets. We have our animal health section for that.

As always, dietary supplements are a supplement, not a substitute for good food and not a substitute for medical advice. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have children, pre-existing medical conditions, or are taking long-term medication, it is advisable to consult your doctor beforehand.
