The ritual

Ein paar frische Scheiben mit heißem Wasser übergießen, nach Geschmack mit Zitrone und Honig: ein beliebtes Getränk an kalten Wintertagen.

Ground ginger root (Zingiber officinale) for cooking, tea and baked goods.

At a glance

  • Plant: Zingiber officinale (ginger), ginger family
  • Origin: India, China, Peru, Nigeria
  • Includes: Gingerols and shogaols (pungent compounds), essential oil with zingiberene
  • Tradition: A spice for millennia in Asia, and in Europe since the Middle Ages in gingerbread and ale.
Why your body is aware of this issue: The pungent compounds in ginger stimulate the same receptors as heat, which is why ginger tea makes you feel warm. You can find more information about the plant and its role in traditional medicine in the profile in the Botanical Archive.

Folk medicine, tradition, research

What Ayurveda and TCM have used ginger root for for over 2,000 years, what the pungent substances trigger in the body, and what studies show about it.

Here's how to use it

Ground ginger is spicier and drier than fresh. Use it in curries, soups, gingerbread, and chai. For tea, add half a teaspoon to hot water with lemon. One gram of ground ginger is roughly equivalent to a thumb-sized piece of fresh root.

Good to know

  • Ginger slightly thins the blood. Consult your doctor if you are taking blood thinners or before surgery.
  • Be careful if you have gallstones, as ginger stimulates bile flow.
  • During pregnancy, do not consume more than one gram per day without consulting a doctor.

As always, remember: a spice or herb is part of good food, not a medicine or medical advice. If you have any health concerns, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or are taking regular medication, it's a good idea to consult your doctor beforehand.
