What tradition tells us about turmeric

False saffron

Saffron that isn't: That's what Marco Polo is said to have called the yellow root. Arab traders brought it to Europe, where it was long considered a cheap substitute for saffron.

Color of happiness

In India, haldi is considered the color of good luck. Before the wedding, a turmeric paste is applied to the bride and groom.

Golden Milk

Gently simmer turmeric with ginger, a pinch of pepper, and a little ghee in milk and drink warm in the evening. In Ayurveda, it is considered bitter and warming.

What folk medicine used turmeric for: in the Botanical Archive →

Ground turmeric root (Curcuma longa) for cooking, golden milk and curries.

At a glance

  • Plant: Curcuma longa (turmeric, turmeric), ginger plant
  • Origin: India, the largest producer, also Indonesia and Peru
  • Includes: Curcuminoids (approximately 3 to 5 percent curcumin), essential oil with turmerone
  • Tradition: For millennia, they have been cornerstones of Ayurveda and Indian cuisine.
Why your body is aware of this issue: Curcumin, the yellow pigment, is one of the most studied plant compounds, but there's a catch: your body barely absorbs it. A crumb of black pepper changes that. Its piperine increases absorption many times over, and fat helps even more. That's exactly how Indian cuisine has always done it.

Folk medicine, tradition, research

What Ayurveda has used turmeric for for millennia, what curcumin can do and why pepper is included: the whole story in a portrait.

Here's how to use it

Always with a pinch of black pepper and a little fat: in curries, rice, lentils, scrambled eggs, or as golden milk (one teaspoon of turmeric, a pinch of pepper, one teaspoon of coconut oil in 250 ml of warm milk or oat milk). It stains strongly, so be careful with light-colored boards and clothing.

Good to know

  • Do not use in large quantities if you have gallstones or bile duct obstruction.
  • Turmeric can enhance the effect of blood thinners.
  • Small amounts used in cooking are harmless. Highly concentrated extracts are a different matter and should not be equated with the spice itself.

As always, remember: a spice or herb is part of good food, not a medicine or medical advice. If you have any health concerns, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or are taking regular medication, it's a good idea to consult your doctor beforehand.
