Tradition & Ritual

What tradition tells us about cinnamon

From Sri Lanka

Ceylon cinnamon is the dried bark of a tree from Sri Lanka. The Portuguese and the Dutch fought over trade with the island in the 16th and 17th centuries.

Herodotus' Cinnamon Bird

The Greek historian Herodotus recounted that large birds carried cinnamon sticks to their nests. Such was the mystery surrounding the spice's origins in antiquity.

The ritual

In Ayurveda, it is considered sweet and warming. In our culture, it adds its fragrance in winter to rice pudding, cinnamon rolls, and as a stick in hot punch.

What folk medicine used cinnamon for: in the Botanical Archive →

Ground Ceylon cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum) from Sri Lanka, the "real" cinnamon with a fine, sweet aroma.

At a glance

  • Plant: Cinnamomum verum (Ceylon cinnamon), laurel family
  • Origin: Sri Lanka, from the inner bark of young shoots
  • Includes: essential oil with cinnamaldehyde and eugenol, tannins, only traces of coumarin
  • Tradition: one of the oldest trade spices in the world, already traded in antiquity via the Incense Route
Why your body is aware of this issue: The difference between Ceylon cinnamon and cheaper cassia cinnamon lies in the coumarin content: cassia contains up to a hundred times more, and coumarin in large quantities puts a strain on the liver. Anyone who adds cinnamon to their muesli or coffee daily should therefore stick with Ceylon cinnamon. It can be recognized by its fine, intricately rolled sticks and its mild flavor.

Folk medicine, tradition, research

What cinnamon has been more than just a spice for millennia, what distinguishes Ceylon from Cassia, and what research says about it.

Here's how to use it

Add it to porridge, coffee and chai, apples, pumpkin and lentils, and oriental rice dishes. Half a teaspoon to one teaspoon of Ceylon cinnamon a day is perfectly fine. Ground cinnamon loses its aroma more quickly, so store it away from light and use it within a year.

Good to know

  • Cinnamon is not a substitute for diabetes medication. Always consult your doctor if you have diabetes.
  • Anyone who eats a lot of cinnamon should make sure it's Ceylon cinnamon. The package should say Cinnamomum verum, not Cassia.
  • Cinnamon oil irritates the skin, the spice itself does not.

As always, remember: a spice or herb is part of good food, not a medicine or medical advice. If you have any health concerns, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or are taking regular medication, it's a good idea to consult your doctor beforehand.
